Potential benefits (from @gino-m ):

  1. To limit cost
  2. To allow the apps the know what to expect so they can prevent crashing from arbitrarily long text
  3. Since the UI doesn't currently support arbitrarily long text; the behavior with very long text is currently undefined (see [Record List] Record list broken on back when tab > 0 selected #2).

If we make the length explicit, we can also distinguish between short and long text, in which case we can treat them differently in UIs
