Hi,
we are investigating renewable energy predictions and would like to utilize Weatherbench2, however, some key impact variables are missing. Would it be feasible to include these in a future version of the dataset?

  • 100m U, V component of wind
  • Surface net solar radiation
  • Surface net solar radiation (clear sky)

Thank you!

What datasets do you mean specifically? ERA5? Or include them in the benchmark? Most ML models don't predict those variables at the moment.

They are available as part of ERA5, but it would be convenient to have them also in the WB2 datasets.

Our hope was that if these were available it could encourage more ML models to predict them, at least as a downstream/finetuning application. Could be quite valuable for the Energy Meteorology community going forward.

I think this ERA5 dataset should have all these variables already: https://github.com/google-research/arco-era5

Does this work? Should be very similar format to the WB2 ERA5 data.
